BASA

Brand Founder: Victoria Mazurova

Brand DNA

Kimonos crafted from sleek, predominantly natural fabrics: silk, viscose, organza, cotton, and linen.

Concept

BASA creates kimonos for every occasion. Their versatility and ease of adaptation into any wardrobe lie in creative styling: paired with sweaters, vests, jeans, heels, or sneakers. At BASA, they adore the understated simplicity and universal appeal of the kimono: it flatters every figure and suits any occasion. Choose a wool version to layer over jeans and a long-sleeve shirt, or throw it on bare skin during summer heat. Pair it with heeled sandals and diamonds for your wedding day.

Brand History

In 2016, Victoria walked into a fabric store and couldn’t leave empty-handed. The colours, textures, and combinations inspired her to sew something. Her mother, a seasoned atelier owner in Nizhny Tagil, helped craft the first drop, which included kimonos, skirts, and dresses. The brand’s concept gradually formed around the kimono shape. Today, BASA garments are crafted in an atelier in Nizhny Tagil, while their showroom is based in Saint Petersburg.

Blitz

Ideal place for creativity?
At home in Nizhny Tagil or my studio in Saint Petersburg’s Petrograd district
Music track most often played when feeling creative?
J.J. Johanson tracks — the perfect balance of tempo and richness for work
A brand item you’d want to wear non-stop?
My black silk kimono. It’s the first luxury fabric I ever bought for myself. Since the kimono (like many of our designs) is oversized, it’s incredibly comforting to have so much silk enveloping you
An item you'd pass on to grandchildren with the words: 'Let this remind you of me'?
I’d love to create something with my own hands: a vase or dish. And I’d definitely pass down a kimono to my daughter or my son’s wife for it to become a family heirloom
Which part of the fashion process is your least/most favourite?
I absolutely dislike the pre-shoot period — the nerves, worries, and steaming garments. It’s a real test for me. But my favourite? Fabric shopping, of course. Seven years later, I still love combining textures, colours, and styling finished pieces
Which historical or literary character would you make the face of the brand?
Someone from the Dune series. Our aesthetic is quite similar, and the voluminous dresses of the Bene Gesserit in the film adaptation left a lasting impression on me
What scent aligns best with your brand?
Last year, we collaborated with Moscow’s Ether Parfume to create a fragrance embodying BASA’s spirit: fresh, subtle, and pleasant, with notes of fig, powder, cannabis, and more
What’s the ideal location in the Urals for a photoshoot?
Places from my childhood — perhaps a garden near my grandfather’s house, or the iconic streets of Nizhny Tagil that were meaningful to me
What’s the hardest part of creating a new collection?
Meeting deadlines! We’ve never managed to hit one. Our small-scale production, limited number of seamstresses, and unwavering commitment to quality make it challenging to expand or compromise
What advice would you give your younger self?
Act immediately when inspiration strikes. If you don’t bring an idea to life right away, you never will
How would you describe your brand in one word?
“Basa” — an old Russian word meaning beauty and elegance
If you could collaborate with any celebrity (or character), who would it be?
Zendaya from Dune
What will change fashion in the near future?
Fashion is already being reshaped by the lack of new design ideas — everything has already been invented. Now, it’s all about styling, colour combinations, and textures. I advocate for an eco-friendly wardrobe with fewer items that can all be mixed and matched
